Montopolis is a neighborhood located southeast of the Austin, Texas, city center. Because of its proximity to two major highways (Texas State Highway 71 and U.S. Route 183), and because it's adjacent to the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport Montopolis has grown into the area it is today.
This Austin neighborhood enjoys the beautiful scenery of Lady Bird Lake to the south, where there are several luxury hotels and apartments for visitors and residents alike. The lake is a major recreation area for residents of Montopolis, where they can enjoy hiking, biking and swimming. Lady Bird Johnson, former first lady, is responsible for the beautiful landscaping on the shores and the parks. In the 1970s Mrs. Johnson focused on a lake beautification project. Lady Bird Lake's shores are surrounded by the Hike and Bike Trail, and many local businesses provide recreational watercraft services along the lakefront portion of the trails.
A public park called Auditorium Shores offers Montopolis hiking and biking activities as well as attracting hundreds of people to different events and festivals during the spring and summer.
South by Southwest (SXSW) is one such annual festival that brings thousands of music lovers to Montopolis. The event is comprised of a set of film and music festivals that take place every spring since 1987. SXSW has continued to grow in size every year, and in 2011, the conference lasted for 10 days.
