Rancho Penasquitos is a neighborhood commonly known as "PQ," and it is located 22 minutes north of San Diego. Nearby major roadways include Route 56 which bisects the community and joins up with Interstate 15 to the east. Black Mountain Road is the main North/South artery and Carmel Mountain Road is the main East/West thoroughfare.
In Spanish, penasquitos means "little cliffs," and the neighborhood abuts Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve – a wildlife area that offers residents of the area the opportunity to bike, hike and horseback ride. There is no shortage of wide open space to explore in Rancho Penasquitos. The community is bordered to the north by Black Mountain Ranch which boasts the highest point in the region, rising to an elevation of 1,500 feet.
Several elementary, middle and high schools service the neighborhood, which is a part of the Poway Unified School District.
The Rancho Penasquitos Town Council organizes events for area residents to enjoy, including a tennis social, summer street fairs and a photography contest and exhibition.
Residents can visit many different eateries in the neighborhood to enjoy traditional options, like pizza and burgers, or more exotic flavors at the diverse selection of ethnic restaurants, including Asian to Mexican.
