East Palo Alto is a neighborhood in San Mateo County, Calif., just 40 minutes south of San Francisco. Major roadways in the area include U.S. Route 101 (commonly known as Bayshore Freeway) to the west and Route 84 (Bayfront Expressway) to the north.
East Palo Alto's community shuttle offers residents free public transportation and connects the neighborhood to the Palo Alto Caltrain station during peak hours.
The community is bordered on the west by Menlo Park, which is the birthplace of Google, Inc. To the south lies Palo Alto, and to the east is the San Francisco Bay, spanned by the famous Golden Gate Bridge. The San Francisquito Creek defines East Palo Alto's southern edge.
Over the last 10 to 15 years, the community of East Palo Alto has undergone changes that have included developing new housing complexes and welcoming numerous big name retailers, including IKEA, Sports Authority, Home Depot, Nordstrom, Starbucks, Office Depot and Best Buy.
The Ravenswood City School District has its headquarters in East Palo Alto. Several preschools, elementary and middle schools call the area their home. High schools in the neighborhood serve students from East Palo Alto in the surrounding neighborhoods, including Carlmont High School in Belmont, Menlo-Atherton High School in Atherton and Woodside High School in Woodside.
