It can become difficult to keep small quarters smelling fresh and clean, even if you are incredibly tidy. Cooking, smoking or pet odors are much more apparent in apartments; however, there are some easy home remedies for obtaining fresh air. Everything from the carpet to the furniture can harbor a scent, but you can follow these tips for bi-weekly cleaning to keep your house smelling like roses:
Carpet: Professional carpet cleaners can be very expensive. If you are looking to get rid of a particular odor or your carpet has not been cleaned in some time, try this home remedy: Sprinkle baking soda all over your carpet and let it sit for a few hours. The longer you leave baking soda in the carpet, the better results you will achieve. After a few hours, vacuum the entire room to get rid of the particles. Baking soda is perfect for getting rid of pet or smoke odors.
HVAC vents: One of the easiest things you can do to ensure the air is clean is to replace the heating, ventilation and air condition filters. This will help get a lot of unfavorable smoke out of the air circulation.
Air: After you aerate your room for at least 24 hours, you may still look for ways to keep your apartment smelling fresh. Try an air purifier to further clean the air in a room. Air purifiers work especially well for small spaces as they can quickly filter all the air going into a room.
If opening a window is not always an option due to city noises or cold weather, you can try to keep the air flowing as much as possible. The fan setting on your air conditioning unit or floor fans will help with optimal ventilation.
Another trick to get rid of foul smells is to place vinegar in a bowl around the apartment. It will take a few days for the smell to clear up; however, this is an eco-friendly and thrifty way to keep a room smelling fresh.
Walls and surfaces: You can also use a mix of vinegar, warm water and baking soda to clean the walls and surfaces in your apartment. Place your homemade mixture in an empty spray bottle and then clean as you would normally. A vinegar mix is especially helpful in getting rid of smoke-related smells such as cigarettes.
Windows: Windows and mirrors can also trap odors. You may need to hire window washers if you live on a high floor. For the inside of the window, use a mixture of liquid dish detergent, water and vinegar to clean the glass.
