University City is a neighborhood in San Diego that is located in the northwestern portion of the city, adjacent to the University of California, San Diego. The campus is to the west of the center of the neighborhood. Locals have access to several major motorways, including Interstate 5, Genesee Avenue and Interstate 805.
This area is divided into two distinct parts that are bisected by Rose Canyon. This is where the Rose Canyon Open Space preserve is located, with railroad tracks passing through it. The older part of University City lies south of Rose Canyon and was built in the 1960s. This section of the neighborhood is historically referred to as University Square.
Residents of the area enjoy hiking, biking and bird watching. The mesas and canyons that create this distinctive topography provide wildlife habitats for more than 100 bird species, as well as majestic views of the surrounding landscape.
Area residents can also take advantage of three local shopping centers as well as a large regional mall referred to as UTC. University City also boasts parks, three elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and police and fire stations.
