The University Place neighborhood is north of downtown Lakewood along the coastline of Puget Sound, and is the closest Lakewood neighborhood to Tacoma, Washington. On the coastline, University Place goes south around Chambers Bay and reaches north around Day Island, and then proceeds inland until S Orchard Street. The southern boundary of University Place is Chambers Creek.

University Place offers both public and private schools, including the Charles Wright Academy, a private school for grades K-12 with a large community campus. Chambers Bay Golf Course offers premier facilities and a scenic recreational expanse with views of the Olympic Mountains along the water. Firecrest Golf Club is also nearby and has been a common source of recreation to the community for over 80 years. Another attraction is Days Island. Days Island has a yacht club and bed and breakfast. University Place is a great midpoint between Tacoma and Lakewood, providing equal access to both downtown areas.

This neighborhood is a 15 minute drive from Defiance Point, a peninsula in northern Tacoma with a full-service park, history museum, zoo and aquarium. University place is near the Anderson Island Ferry Terminal, the local gateway to the surrounding islands.
