Learn more about Excelsior

Excelsior is a neighborhood on the south side of San Francisco. Major nearby roads include John F. Foran Freeway, Bayshore Freeway, Mansell Street, Geneva Avenue and Mission Street. Neighborhood residents can travel throughout the city via car or bus. There are also rail lines just outside of Excelsior.

John McLaren Park is one of the neighborhood's most celebrated features. This large green space boasts hiking and biking trails, McNab Lake, softball diamonds, playgrounds and the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater.

The Portola Branch of the San Francisco Public Library is located on the east side of Excelsior. Residents can check out books or partake in one of the library's many classes and clubs, such as knitting, photography, tai chi and tutoring. Many of the staff members at the library are multilingual and speak some combination of English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Toisanese and Vietnamese in order to cater to the neighborhood's dense Asian population.

The Excelsior Art and Music Festival takes place in September and celebrates neighborhood culture. Attendees can listen to live music, peruse art created by locals, eat ethnic food and participate in making crafts. This family-friendly event is the perfect way to get to know Excelsior.

There are multiple schools in the area, including Cornerstone Academy, Hillcrest Elementary School, the San Francisco School, E.R. Taylor Elementary School, Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School, Alta Vista School and Bridgemont High School.
